Pedanius Dioscorides was a Greek doctor, physician and botanist. He was the author of the encyclopaedia De Materia Medica about herbal medicine, which was used as a pharmacopoeia for more than 1500 years. This work is the basic historical source on the medicine of Ancient Greece and Rome and other civilisations. It contains descriptions of almost 600 plants and the encyclopaedia is richly illustrated.
Condition: the original leather binding with the impressed year 1579 is slightly damaged and worn. The book is complete, in good condition, but some pages are loose. The title page has an inscription “dedit Christophorus Hostus, Physicus Anno 1579“. In the bottom right-hand corner is a stamp FRANZ JOSEPH KINDER SPITAL IN PRAG.
